The DePuy Synthes Degree Apprenticeship Engineering programme is designed to create the engineers of the future. You will have the opportunity to work alongside, and be guided, by industry experts in the Medical Device field whilst DePuy sponsor you through your University Engineering degree.

Qualifications required The candidate will ideally have

  • GCSEs in English, Maths, and Science – grade C/4 or above

And one of the following:

  • A or AS levels (or equivalent) in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics subjects
  • Advanced Engineering Apprenticeship
  • 14 to 19 Advanced Diploma in Engineering or Manufacturing
  • Previous work experience or employment in engineering at Level 3

We are open to other equivalent experiences/ qualifications.

Salary £22,000
Annual wage will increase as you work toward completion of your Apprenticeship if you demonstrate a pro-active practical aptitude with problem solving skills and are willing to accept responsibility.

Cogent Skills is currently recruiting on behalf of DePuy Synthes for 4 enthusiastic and hardworking NPD Engineer/Test Engineer Degree Apprentices to join the Research and Development team.

The rotations into different roles at DePuy Synthes over the 5-year scheme will ensure you gain and practice all the skills and knowledge required to become a confident engineer and a valued member of our team. Your part-time study towards a Foundation Degree (FdEng) at University will supplement the experience.

During the following rotations, you will be instrumental in:

  • Identify measurement needs and make informed decisions about the
  • testing process and timescales required, including selection of; tools,
  • equipment, instrumentation and software programme.
  • Access and interpret information and documentation to support the testing
  • process including; data, manuals, specifications, catalogues, calibration
  • certificates and computer-generated information.
  • Prepare the work environment and perform tests and checks on testing
  • tools, equipment, instrumentation and software programs and determine
  • suitability for use.
  • Take action when non-conforming tools, equipment, instrumentation, materials
  • and software programs have been identified.
  • Plan and perform measurement tasks to ensure verifiable results, using
  • measurement tools, equipment, instrumentation and software programmes,
  • following specified procedures and methodology.
  • Retrieve, analyse, interpret, validate and record measurement results and data in
  • line with specification.
  • Contribute to the production of records, reports and other measurement
  • documentation.
  • Communicate relevant and specific information through various channels to meet
  • customer requirement.
  • Comply with statutory regulations, national and international standards, industry
  • and organisational procedures and requirements relating to codes of conduct
  • when carrying out measurement task.
  • Comply with relevant Health and Safety legislation, regulation, standards, industry and organisational policies and procedures and requirements relating to safe working practice.
  • Comply with policies and procedures relating to the preparation, storage,
  • standards, control and handling of samples, tools, equipment, instrumentation
  • and software programme.
  • Contribute to product validations and requirement plans.
  • Develop an understanding of materials used in orthopedics.
  • Write technical reports providing supporting research evidence from literature.
  • Research and develop test protocols for the new product development portfolio including digital usability and accessibility.
  • Assist in providing technical and design support for products in development, and existing product lines to markets and other functions.
  • Assist in the preparation of documentation for Design History Files and project documentation in accordance with regulatory and company procedures.
  • Work closely with surgeons to gain an in-depth understanding of the joint replacement procedures.
  • Concept work and brainstorming ideas
  • 3-D CAD modelling and drafting
  • Prototype assembly
  • Work with vendors regarding designs and manufacturing processes
  • Medical instrument design work
  • May handle several projects concurrently.
  • Work with other Business functions including Design, Bioengineering, Quality, Manufacturing, Testing and Research locally and across the J&J network.

For a Research and Test position, the Apprentice will be trained to work with specific machines and how to document the progress of their testing support in a way which is fully compliant with good laboratory practice. The Apprentice will be expected to help with general day to day laboratory tasks e.g. laboratory tidiness, compliance documentation, health and safety. From day one you will be working with qualified technicians helping you to develop your skills within a manufacturing environment.

Apprenticeship Standard: Manufacturing Engineer (Degree)

Training Provider: Themis – Burnley College

Qualification: Cogent Skills and DePuy Synthes have developed an ‘Apprenticeship Training Plan’. It includes a mixture of external and internal training that will ensure the Apprentice is fully competent by the end of their programme and ready to take the Apprenticeship end point assessment.

The Apprentice will receive a minimum of 30% (1.5 day) of their training away from their day-to-day job. 1 day will be spent at university, whilst the other 0.5 days will be study time on the DePuy site (subject to Covid working patterns at the time).

After a period of foundation skills and technical knowledge development all apprentices will be required to achieve the following qualifications:

Integrated Engineering Foundation Degree (FdEng)

For the Development Phase the apprentice will build on their foundation knowledge by completing a top up degree working towards a BSc (Hons) or BEng (Hons) in Engineering. The Apprentice will gain will expand their understanding to a higher level and commence on specialised modules during the latter part of this qualification.

In addition, they will gain skills specific to the working practices of DePuy.

Delivery model: A mixture of blended learning, online/block release.

The work pattern involves day working. On occasions (notified in advance) the business may require additional daytime working and potentially weekend working.

Apprentices may be eligible to annual wage increments subject to company budgets and satisfactory completion of goals.

Working within a heavily regulated environment requires strict adherence to in-house protocol and HSE (Health and Safety Executive) legislation with a high degree of integrity and attention to details in all aspects of work.

Day release at University for knowledge-based training as part of the working week as well as half day study time whilst on site at DePuy.

The site provides on-site secure parking and has good transport links to Leeds City Centre.
