JOB DESCRIPTION
UCB invites 2 students to help with drug development in their UK Statistics department based in Slough, Berkshire.
Statisticians have a critical role to play in support of medical research and drug development. A poorly designed trial or inadequate data will not enable a team to make an informed decision about the progression of a drug, so it is imperative to have statisticians at every stage of development so decisions can be made with confidence.
Clinical trials produce vast amounts of data, and the role of the statistician is pivotal in interpreting this data to determine if the drug is safe and effective for patients. The job focuses on data visualisation, employing graphs and tables to present findings. The need for creative solutions is paramount, as each study is unique in its structure and requirements.
In your day-to-day tasks, you will identify trends, troubleshoot issues, apply logical reasoning, and fit models to clarify what the data signify either in preclinical research experiments or in clinical trials. Quick thinking and meticulous attention to detail are crucial to guarantee patient safety, especially when operating under tight deadlines. Both formal and informal training in statistics and programming will be available; prior programming experience is not a prerequisite, and you’ll have the chance to participate in relevant scientific seminars.
To qualify for these roles, you should be in your 2nd year of a BSc in Mathematics or Statistics. Students enrolled in other courses with a substantial statistical focus will also be considered. Essential skills include effective communication, presentation capabilities, organisational aptitude, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Enthusiasm and a keen eye for detail are also highly valued.
