First in Her Family to Apply to University: Hayat Nur's Journey Through the Nuclear Sponsorship Scheme

The Nuclear Sponsorship Scheme provides financial support and opportunities for students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds who are interested in studying STEM subjects and pursuing a career in the nuclear industry.

For Hayat, the scheme has provided the support and opportunity to pursue a Biochemistry degree while gaining an insight into the nuclear sector. As the first person in her family to apply to university, the scheme has helped open the door to higher education and a future career in STEM.

Below, Hayat shares her journey, what attracted her to the nuclear industry and how the Nuclear Sponsorship Scheme has helped shape her future ambitions.

A bit about me and my journey into higher education

Coming from an ethnic minority background, as a first-generation immigrant and someone who grew up in a disadvantaged area, I didn't always see higher education as something that was within my reach. However, I continued to work towards my goals and, after being diagnosed with dyslexia, I gained a better understanding of how I learn and the support I need to succeed.

I went on to complete an Access to Science course and pass my manual driving test. Now, I'm the first person in my family to apply to university, and I've just completed my first year studying Biochemistry.

Why did I apply to the Nuclear Sponsorship Scheme?

The scheme felt like an opportunity that was made for me. It's aimed at people from lower socioeconomic backgrounds with an interest in studying STEM and eventually working in the nuclear industry.

I was worried about the costs, loans, and job prospects, and I was looking for a programme that would support me through university while offering learning opportunities to help me get ahead.

I received an email from Cogent Skills via UCAS about the scheme and jumped at the chance to apply. I later had the opportunity to complete my placement with Cogent Skills, where I discovered that the campaign that first brought the scheme to my attention had actually been created by someone I was now working alongside. I'm so glad I saw it in time to apply!

What appealed to me about the nuclear industry?

A combination of things drew me to the nuclear industry. I love nature and care about climate change, so I wanted to be part of the bigger picture in helping achieve our net zero goals.

In addition, the job opportunities are great. I also wanted a career that could combine my interest in science and nature. What first sparked my interest was an article I read about SMRs. I found them really intriguing and innovative.

How has it changed my life?

I never thought I'd go to university. Even now, when I say it, I still can't believe it. I'm at university! I feel very privileged to have this opportunity to learn and grow.

The scheme has given me a fresh start and opened doors for me that I never knew existed. Being able to focus on my studies without worrying about the financial side of higher education has made a huge difference. I'm completing a fully funded degree in Biochemistry, remaining debt-free, and the additional bursary provides further support.

Most importantly, the scheme has given me the confidence to believe that university and a career in STEM really are within my reach. I've learned that you can't be accepted if you never apply, and taking that first step can open up opportunities you never expected.

What I love most about the scheme is that it allows you to choose any appropriate STEM subject. You're not forced to study something specific, such as engineering. You can choose from a wide range of subjects, and there are opportunities in whichever field you decide to study.

What would you say to someone considering applying for the Nuclear Sponsorship Scheme?

I'd say the nuclear industry is much broader than people think, so if you're worried about finding a job that suits you, don't be. That's why the scheme covers STEM instead of just engineering. It's a growing industry and needs people with all kinds of skills. Apply and see where it takes you. You might be surprised by how it turns out.

Looking ahead

I want to work as a Nuclear Safety Inspector because I like the idea of making sure high safety standards are met. And it's such a vital part of the system. I want to be a part of something important. I also like how much attention to detail the role requires. I enjoy taking my time, doing things thoroughly, and making sure they're done right.
