LABORATORY SCIENTIST

LEVEL 5 (ST0247)

The Level 5 Laboratory Scientist standard is now retired for any registrations after 17/04/2019. For those apprentices who are registered on the Level 5 Laboratory Scientist standard, these apprentices carry out technical and scientific activity within the laboratory setting

Level: LEVEL 5

Duration: 60 months

Funding Band: £27,000

Entry Requirements:

3 GCSEs at grade c or higher including Maths, English & Science plus A-levels or existing L3 qualifications

Analysing, interpreting and evaluating scientific information, Laboratory Scientists develop and implement experiments or investigations, to solve problems or improve products or processes.

Level 5 Laboratory Scientists will work across the chemical, pharmaceutical, biotechnology sectors and their typical job roles include:

  • Analytical Chemist
  • Research & Development Scientist
  • Molecular Biologist
  • Microbiologist

The standard is made up of core knowledge, skills and behaviours as well as specialist knowledge and skill requirements associated with one of: Analytical Science, Chemical Science or Life Science.

Typically, the training period will last around 60 months, where the learning is focused on ensuring the apprentice acquires the knowledge, skills and behaviours as well as achieving a qualification at level 5 or higher. Completion of this standard warrants application to the Science Council for RSci (Registered Scientist) status.
