We asked Ben Smith and Louie Hall about their experience on the Science Manufacturing Technician Apprentice at FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies.

Ben Smith

Why did you choose a manufacturing apprenticeship?

Through a manufacturing apprenticeship I have been able to learn and develop engineering skills and knowledge through onsite work placements and studying towards nationally recognised qualifications. Th Science Manufacturing Technician apprenticeship has taught the basics and given me the appreciation of a range of skills including soldering, assembly of products, machining, and maintenance of equipment.

What inspired you to take the apprenticeship route?

I personally was attracted to the idea of the hands on learning experience manufacturing apprenticeships offer. Combined with the opportunity to develop my knowledge and understanding through theoretical classes, I felt that a manufacturing apprenticeship was the best way for me to learn.

How did you find the role?

I found this role and applied for it through the Cogent Skills website.

What made you chose Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies?

I chose this company because I wanted to start out my career which I am passionate about with a company who’s mission is to provide a positive impact to the world through manufacturing high quality pharmaceuticals.

Would you recommend an apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships are a good way to gain access to a company or a sector you want to work in, and if you do a really good job and become a valued member of the team it will put you in a strong position when there are permanent job opportunities. Learn transferable skills.

Louie Hall

Can you introduce yourself?

I’m Louie Hall, I’m 20 years old and have just finished my fourth year of my Science Industry Maintenance Technician apprenticeship at FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies.

Why did you choose a manufacturing apprenticeship?

I chose a manufacturing apprenticeship as it seemed more appealing to me than completing A-Levels and going to university. The combination of being paid to learn and the opportunity to work in a professional environment so early on seemed very beneficial while also avoiding debts incurred when completing a university degree.

How did you find out about the apprenticeship?

I found the apprenticeship on the gov.uk website and thought FUJIFILM would be a good company to work for due to the growing nature of the business and the size of the organisation.

Would you recommend apprenticeships to your peers and what does your future hold?

I would recommend this route to another young person in my position. It has also helped me gain full-time employment upon completing the apprenticeship, which some people struggle with after university.
This route has also led me to potentially start a degree next year, which will be covered by the company, meaning I will not lose out on any form of education by choosing this route whilst also having all of the training paid for.
