Why did you want to study for a degree apprenticeship?
I realised that an apprenticeship could offer better experience, professional and academic growth, and the opportunity to widen my network more than I would have at university. After considering different degree apprenticeships, I found one which suited both my extroverted nature with my passion for science.
I went through several rounds of interviews and was ultimately offered the position. With Pfizer having such a global presence, I saw many opportunities for growth and learning, as well as pursuing a future career at the company by applying for their graduate programme.
How has Cogent Skills supported you through your apprenticeship?
Right the way through my apprenticeship, Cogent Skills has given me so much support. From formal element like undertaking reviews of my work and progress, to having a casual chat over a coffee, my Skills Account Manager has always been there to help and guide me.
How has your employer supported you?
From the outset, Pfizer has been incredibly support through mentorship, including regular one-to-one sessions with my manager and comprehensive systems training. The company places a strong emphasis on protecting our university study time, so there’s no expectation to complete work on academic days.
Pfizer also actively encourages continuous development through initiatives like the Pfizer Learning Academy and sponsors industry events to broaden our exposure.
How can people at your stage in your career benefit from a degree apprenticeship?
At this stage in my career, a degree apprenticeship offers a unique and highly valuable blend of academic learning and practical experience. Unlike traditional university routes or entry-level roles alone, it enables accelerated development by applying theoretical knowledge directly to real-world projects.
The structured learning path means I’m building both technical and professional skills in a way that’s aligned with industry needs. Also, working across diverse teams helps me build a strong professional network, opening doors to mentorship, collaboration, and future opportunities that are essential for long-term career growth.
What’s next for you?
I’m currently exploring graduate programmes which will allow me to continue developing my skills. Looking ahead, I’m also interested in pursuing a Level 7 apprenticeship to gain more professional qualifications.
