This includes a range of careers outreach work, designed to inspire the STEM workforce of the future and attract the next generation of talent to the sector.

Developed in conjunction with the Science Industry Partnership (SIP), the SIP/STEM Ambassador Programme supports AstraZeneca’s apprentices to work with a range of different people – from students, parents, teachers and career advisers – to learn presentation skills and promote the many careers available in a science-based employers. 

Having apprentices who study a variety of subjects acting as SIP Ambassadors not only showcases the range of jobs available but also showcases the diversity of apprentices, which reflects the wider AstraZeneca workforce.

Attending outreach events allows apprentice SIP ambassadors to talk about their work and their journey: from beginning their apprenticeships at the start of their careers, to learning new skills and building their confidence when presenting and sharing their experiences.

AstraZeneca provides specific materials for outreach events as well STEM resources, meaning whether it’s students choosing subjects for the next stage in their education or those entering full-time work, they are equipped to inspire their audience.

During the COVID-19 global pandemic this training was delivered virtually, but the programme has since returned to face-to-face delivery. This has provided a great opportunity to practice these new skills in a safe environment and has created even more networking opportunities. IT apprentice Anders Fitz-Robinson said

The ambassador training was really helpful and informative. As someone who has been attending careers events and given talks on my career pathway for the last couple of years, it’s given me a different perspective to consider and techniques to apply in the feature.

I’m really looking forward to helping inspire more people to consider a career in STEM thanks to the skills I’ve developed through this process.

AstraZeneca’s Director of Apprenticeship Programme, Kim Hardman, said:
