When I finished school, I knew that university was not the path for me. I have seen many students spend years studying, only to struggle to find a job after graduation. The apprenticeship route, on the other hand, provides the opportunity to earn money while still studying and gaining valuable work experience. It was the perfect choice for me.
I initially started my apprenticeship as a welder but soon realised that it was not the career for me. Thankfully, a friend recommended the maintenance technician role, and it sounded like an exciting opportunity. I applied and fortunately, I was successful. Now, I work alongside a fantastic team, and the work environment is always interesting and varied.
Each day starts with a toolbox talk where we go through safety procedures and discuss the tasks assigned for the day. After collecting the necessary tools and equipment, the operations team ensure that all equipment is safe and secure. We go through the necessary isolations and complete our tasks. If there are no jobs for the day, we prepare for the next day and deal with any necessary paperwork.
As an apprentice, I have had the opportunity to learn in various ways. The first two years were spent studying for my BTEC at college. After that, we began our HNC, which was combined with workplace learning. In addition, we have had numerous training courses, including asbestos removal, which required off-site travel.
For me, the mix of formal and practical learning opportunities as an apprentice has been ideal. I find deskwork boring and appreciate the balance of hands-on work with theoretical knowledge. Sometimes, the theoretical learning can be interesting, presenting me with new concepts and ideas that I can apply to my practical work.

I think anyone who who likes physically doing something as opposed to desk work would would benefit… it’s your golden ticket. I would recommend someone to an apprenticeship. Obviously you’re getting paid and you have a job.

Choosing the apprenticeship route has been a good option for me. Not only do I earn money while studying and gaining valuable work experience, but I also have the opportunity to demonstrate my skills and prove my worth to employers. Apprenticeships are highly respected, and the training and education received are tangible proof of one’s capabilities.
In contrast, university education can leave students with little practical experience. While it is a personal choice, I highly recommend apprenticeships to those who prefer hands-on work and want to earn a good income while studying.
I am grateful for the opportunities my apprenticeship has provided me. The balance of formal and practical learning has equipped me with valuable skills and knowledge, and I look forward to continuing my career in the maintenance field.
