Cogent Skills is proud to launch its newest report, ‘A greenprint on skills for the low-carbon industries’.
This is a strategic roadmap which will help start the conversation about advancing the green skills and occupations required to achieve net zero within the UK science and technology sector.
Its findings are employer-led and based on discussions with more than 40 experts in a range of sectors, including hydrogen, carbon capture, batteries, fuel cells and nuclear.
At the same time, many established industries, such as downstream, chemicals, and polymers – known as transitioning industries – are also evolving and must find new ways of working to deliver the transformative innovations necessary for achieving net zero.
The full report provides an overview of each technology area, followed by an occupation and skills mapping exercise detailing the roles needed. It then analyses the current supply of skills in these areas before offering recommendations on how industry and its stakeholders can work collaboratively to manage the transition.
Chief Executive Officer of Cogent Skills, Justine Fosh, said:
“This report is the start of a conversation around the specific skills to drive growth across a range of emerging, low-carbon industries.
“However, with uncertainty about the skills required and their availability, industry must collaborate and forge partnerships to understand the skills requirement and develop a strategy to deliver the talent needed for green transition and growth – and this includes creating diverse apprenticeship standards that will reflect today’s technologies and industry needs.
“Unless industry can access the next generation of talent – including engineers, scientists, technicians and operators – any plan for a just transition will fall short.
“That means harnessing the energy and enthusiasm of younger people to tackle the climate crisis by showing how science and technology is a route to making meaningful change, as well as a rewarding career.”
