Process Safety – How to manage it effectively

industrial building and woman engineer.

The issue of managing process safety lies at the heart of many accidents.

In many organisations process safety is seen as being simply the responsibility of the process safety department or technical safety engineers. This means that leadership and management are not engaged in managing process safety and it is this lack of leadership commitment that is the root cause of many process safety accidents.

Failures to appropriately manage or effectively review changes that affect process safety, from the top of the organisation downwards, can cause major hazards to occur. Most major accidents are preventable; therefore, it is important that safety lessons are incorporated throughout all major hazard sites. Boardroom decisions have a significant impact upon major hazard safety but this is not always recognised, as that impact may not be felt until sometime later.

Recent years have seen several reportable incidents and near misses occur in major hazard businesses, and one important factor is that most businesses do not have a strong Process Safety Management culture in place. A strong Process Safety Management culture is vital to safe operation and will compliment your competence management system; a weak process safety culture could potentially contribute to the occurrence of a major accident.

Cogent Skills Solutions can help you to develop a robust Process Safety Management programme throughout your organisation, which can create a long lasting strong Process Safety Management Culture.

With over 9 years of experience in delivering high quality culture change Process Safety programmes and PSM training for major hazard industries, we are confident we can help you to strengthen your own internal culture.
