Commissioning opportunities with the Hydrogen and Carbon Capture Skills Accelerator

Cogent Skills is commissioning providers to deliver two projects as part of the Hydrogen and Carbon Capture Skills Accelerator:

  • the development of two accredited courses by March 2026, training courses/content associated with these qualifications and the dissemination of information and advice to providers on their delivery.
  • support sector experts to deliver masterclasses to T level students to enhance their knowledge and understanding about working in the hydrogen and/or carbon capture sector

Background

A Strategic Skills Plan for the UK Hydrogen Economy ‘Empowering The Future: A Strategic Skills Plan for the UK Hydrogen Economy’ was launched by The Hydrogen Skills Alliance (HSA) in February 2025. This strategy provides a clear picture of the roles required across the hydrogen value chain, our current strengths and the skills challenge we face for hydrogen to scale up quickly.

It sets out the need for a coordinated and collaborative approach between skills providers, employers and government to overcome the systemic market failure in hydrogen and CCUS skills development to rapidly ‘boost’ the availability and capability of skills and training provision across the UK. Without this intervention, there is a significant risk that the training provider landscape will not be ready to meet employer demand for upskilling and reskilling their existing and future workforce.

In October this year, the Hydrogen and Carbon Capture Skills Accelerator was launched by the Hydrogen Skills Alliance (HSA) and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ).

The establishment of a Hydrogen and CCUS Skills Accelerator (HCCSA) is supporting the creation of evidence-based skills frameworks and the development and testing of training interventions in 2 pilot regions; the North West (NW) and South West (SW). These projects are aligned to hydrogen and carbon capture infrastructure and energy projects specific to each region.
