The DePuy Synthes Degree Apprenticeship Project Management programme is designed to create the leaders of the future. You will have the opportunity to work alongside, and be guided, by industry experts in the Medical Device field whilst DePuy sponsor you through your University degree.

Qualifications required The candidate will ideally have

  • GCSEs in English, Maths, and Science – grade C/4 or above

And one of the following:

  • A or AS levels (or equivalent) in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics subjects
  • Advanced Engineering Apprenticeship
  • 14 to 19 Advanced Diploma in Engineering or Manufacturing
  • Previous work experience or employment in engineering at Level 3

We are open to other equivalent experiences/ qualifications.

Salary £22,000
Annual wage will increase as you work toward completion of your Apprenticeship if you demonstrate a pro-active practical aptitude with problem solving skills and are willing to accept responsibility.

Working Hours 37 hours per week. Monday to Thursday 7am – 3.30pm, with a 30 minute lunch break. Friday, 7am – 12pm.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Cogent Skills is currently recruiting on behalf of DePuy Synthes for an enthusiastic and hardworking Project Management Degree apprentice to join the Product Management and Manufacturing team.

DePuy Synthes is part of Johnson and Johnson and is one of the world’s leading orthopedic development facilities, designed to stimulate innovation, communication, and collaboration in order to advance medical device solutions that deliver value for healthcare providers and improve people’s lives.

A documentation and PLM project manager role is intended to drive and track the overall timeline for the interaction of new product development projects (including PFR’s) with the PLM system. It will drive efficiencies throughout the project by providing expert management and support to the project team.

This role outline is based on the currently employed Adaptive coordinator role (Leeds & Warsaw) with additional functional requirements to integrate the role within PCTs

The role will manage these interactions across multiple projects

The role is expected to identify further efficiencies within the process and drive CIPs for the process

Two of the Key Attributes that have been identified for the role and are the main drivers identified to improve the overall CO efficiency are:

  • Communication
  • Proficiency in PLM system

Communication; particularly around awareness of the following to improve CO timelines:

  • CO/CA &CT requirements
    • PCT members
    • What is required to raise the CO
    • Approvers
  • CO /CA &CT content
    • Approvers to be aware of the content of the CO /CA &CT before it arrives in their inbox
  • CO /CA &CT timeline
    • Approvers to be aware of the timeline for the CO /CA &CT review and Approval, including the impact of delayed reviews on overall project timeline
  • General communication with non PCT PLM system team
    • Doc Control etc.

*CO – Change Order, CA – Change assessment, CT – change task

PLM Proficiency

  • PLM proficiency is key to ensuring the benefits of this role can be used to their full extent
  • One central contact for the whole PCT for PLM associated questions and needs
  • Ability to communicate PLM process and estimated timelines with Project PM and Development lead
  • Ability to work closely with Doc Control to ensure minimal impact of procedural changes

  • Email/Face to Face/ meetings
  • Discussions on what CO’s are needed and when, how long will each CO take, how are the CO’s progressing.
  • Weekly tracker updates on current CO’s for projects.
  • Helping chase through stubborn CO’s.

Engineers

  • Bioengineers/Project engineers
  • Design Engineers
  • Test Engineers
  • Email/ face to face/ meetings.
  • Regarding what CO’s need doing, what the CO will be for, what info needs to be included on the CO i.e. drawings/ redlines/ change tasks etc, who the approvers are to be, establishing what needs to be DMR linked to what in a CO.
  • Updating on progress of the CO’s
  • Chasing approvers.

Marketing

  • Email/ face to face/ meetings.
  • Code creation CO’s, P1 to P3, Type code flip, BFS, surgical technique routing.
  • Discuss what is needed on the CO’s
  • Information to be filled in on necessary forms etc

Purchasing

  • Emails/ meetings
  • Help on filling in SCP-512/ PIFF forms with necessary purchasing information.
  • Chasing for approval.

Labelling

  • Emails/ skype meetings
  • Producing label request forms
  • Routing label CO’s
  • Tracking status of label CO’s

Further Potential Administrative Tasks for the Doc & PLM PM Role:

  • Budget tracker & P/O trackers
  • General
  • Purchasing
  • BtB tasks

This role would only have so much influence to drive things forward, requires:

  • Cross functional team resource cooperation
  • Certain CO/CA/CT processes cannot happen due to systems and hence this role could not influence these
  • Requires an escalation mechanism to provide role re-enforcement

TRAINING TO BE DELIVERED

Apprenticeship Standard: Project Manager (Degree)

Training Provider: York St John University

Qualification: Cogent Skills and DePuy Synthes have developed an ‘Apprenticeship Training Plan’. It includes a mixture of external and internal training that will ensure the Apprentice is fully competent by the end of their programme and ready to take the Apprenticeship end point assessment.

The Apprentice will receive a minimum of 30% (1.5 day) of their training away from their day-to-day job.

  • Association for Project Management (APM) Project Management Qualification (PMQ) or equivalent course
  • Completion of Level D professional qualification in year 2
  • Online course and examination
  • Apprentices are eligible for Student Membership of the APM, at the end of the programme they are eligible for full membership (MAPM)gain will expand their understanding to a higher level and commence on specialised modules during the latter part of this qualification.
  • In addition, they will gain skills specific to the working practices of DePuy.

Delivery model: A mixture of blended learning, online/Block release.

  • Blended delivery format: with a mix of face-to-face teaching and online learning. Each module has a 2-day ‘in person’ workshop built in.
  • Each year is split into four teaching blocks each consisting of 10 weeks, with one 20 credit module being taught per block. 
  • In Years 1 and 2 apprentices also undertake a skills-based module worth 40 credits which runs across the year.
  • The final 40 credits are completed within a 6-month period and form the End Point Assessment

THINGS TO CONSIDER

The work pattern involves day working. On occasions (notified in advance) the business may require additional daytime working and potentially weekend working.

Apprentices may be eligible to annual wage increments subject to company budgets and satisfactory completion of goals.

Working within a heavily regulated environment requires strict adherence to in-house protocol and HSE (Health and Safety Executive) legislation with a high degree of integrity and attention to details in all aspects of work.

Day release at University for knowledge-based training as part of the working week as well as half day study time whilst on site at DePuy.

The site provides on-site secure parking and has good transport links.
